“I’m not the best bass player in the world, I’m not even the best bass player in U2; but I am the bass player in U2.”

Happy Birthday,Adam Clayton! [March 13,1960]

Happy 53rd birthday to our favorite bass player!

Happy Birthday, Adam  Born March 13, 1960.

“I can look at myself in the mirror. I didn’t use to be able to do it. I see someone who is incredibly lucky, who still has so much ahead of him rather than behind him, and I’m very grateful. I cannot believe how good my life is. I did not expect this.” (x).

On March 13th, 1960 in the small town of Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England, another baby was born. This baby was normal, and just like every other baby that was born in that hospital. He was named Adam Charles Clayton. Adam had nothing special about him- he didn’t sing like an angel while growing up, he couldn’t run a mile in four minutes, and he couldn’t lift a hundred pounds by the age of eight. Who knew that this man would become the best bassist in the world and the coolest person to ever grace the planet? Who knew that people around the world would smile at the sound of his name, at the sound of his bass playing? Who knew people would be down on their knees, begging him to sign his name on a piece of paper or a t-shirt? Who knew that on March 13th, 1960 in Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England, one of the most important people in my life, and many other people’s lives, would be born?

Adam. My Adam. Your Adam. Our Adam.
The cool guy, pluckin’ his bass strings, nonchalantly smiling and not giving a fuck whether anyone loves him or not, just immersing himself into the music. The sweetheart, the one you just wanna hug forever and eat cookies with.
The adorable, grey haired, sincere 53 year old many U2 fans adore.

Adam will probably never read this- I’m 100% sure he won’t- but that won’t stop me from sharing my love for him with you all. Adam has been there for me since I was seven years old. He’s one of four men that saved my life. People usually neglect the bassist, and people aren’t really fond of his bass playing, but I always find his playing fantastic, filled with soul and emotion and of course, coolness. He’s the best bass player to ever exist, and I couldn’t thank him enough for being there for me, for making me smile.

“I’m hanging on, you’re all that’s left to hold onto.” Adam is one of the four men that I have to hold onto. Adam taught me how to not give a fuck, how to find meaning in music, and last but not least, how to be cool. Whenever I see U2 live, I always get the spot near Adam, because I just want to see him play up close, to see him smile up close, and that’s the second greatest thing in the world. The first greatest thing (don’t forget the rest of the boys! they’re all in a big special package!) was given to all of us U2 fans 53 years ago, when Adam Charles Clayton was born.

Happy birthday, Adam.
We can’t explain in words how much we absolutely adore and love you. Thank you for every bass note you’ve swaggered into our lives.
Stay cool, Silver Fox.
